South Africa is experiencing some severe weather and it seems that every year, floods and heavy rainfall batter various provinces. This means residents, municipalities, businesses and agriculture need an affordable and immediate solution to contain and redirect floodwater. Custom Bulk Bags now offers the perfect products – customisable sand bags.
As a subsidiary of Deneb Investments Limited, which is a JSE-listed company, Custom Bulk Bags has the capacity and backing to produce these sand bags in high volumes for governmental departments, provincial disaster relief agencies, enterprises and landowners who need to redirect water or reclaim land from floods.
We are a leading manufacturer and supplier of bulk bags in South Africa and produce up to 3.5 million bulk bags per year. Our regular bulk bags can also be filled with sand and used as makeshift flood barriers in times of crisis. These and our specialised sand bags are available at competitive prices, depending on sizes and specs. See what our General Manager, Chris Byram, has to say about these innovative new products:
Why sand bags are effective during floods
Floods displace communities, disrupt business and cause severe damage to properties. The simplest and most accessible flood protection tools for South Africans are sand bags. While they may not be 100% waterproof, they offer a fast and easy way to divert water from properties, land erosion and crops.
Sand bags can be placed on roads, river banks, pathways and even inside buildings to drastically slow down the ingress of water. The sand inside the bags soaks up the water and creates a heavy barrier that cannot be pushed over by the floodwater. They can be used to reinforce existing barriers, increase the height of river banks or even create makeshift channels through which water can flow and stem the energy of raging waters.
Using sand bags for land reclamation
Once the rains have subsided, the focus turns to reclaiming land. These products are instrumental in pushing back encroaching water and regaining lost ground. Here are some tips for stacking sand bags for land reclamation:
1. Ensure tight stacking – Only fill your sand bags two-thirds or three-quarters of the way with sand or soil. This makes it easier to stack them and will prevent the bags from splitting. Make sure that the base layer is compact and that spaces between the bags are minimised. For extra stability, fold the top of the bag over and stack them in a staggered brick pattern so that no vertical seams line up.
2. Start at water entry points – Identify the areas where water is flowing in and start building your barriers there. It’s important to stem the flow from upstream. Stack the bags around doorways, basements and other vulnerable openings in buildings. For larger outdoor areas, create channels with the bags to help redirect water downhill or to lower areas.
3. Push back residual water – Once floodwater recedes, use the sand bags to push back residual water while you pump it out. You can gradually move these barriers as the water level recedes and the ground dries up.
Remember that sand bags are most effective when used in conjunction with other flood control measures. They are a highly affordable and versatile tool in the fight against floods and heavy rains. Custom Bulk Bags is on hand to provide customised sand bags to provinces across South Africa that are dealing with erratic weather and has the capacity to roll out bags in huge numbers in a short turnaround time.
