When handling, storing, and moving mass quantities of goods, safety is of utmost importance. General workplace injury statistics from 2024 underscore the need for safety and vigilance in industrial environments. The Department of Employment and Labour reports that thousands of occupational injuries happen in South Africa every year, many of which are related to industries that use bulk bags.

This highlights how important it is for companies to put safety first at every level of their operations. Custom Bulk Bags is a leading manufacturer and supplier of bulk bags in South Africa. We produce up to 3.5 million units per year and our products can safely hold between 500kg and two tonnes of material per bag.

Knowing the distinction between Safety Factor Rating (SFR) and Safe Working Load (SWL) will help to promote safety in the workplace. Although these two phrases are sometimes used synonymously, they refer to different concepts that have important ramifications for buyers of bulk bags.

The distinction between SWL and SFR

The SWL of a bulk bag refers to the maximum weight that it is intended to securely support under typical working circumstances; i.e. it is the maximum weight that the bag is approved to support without experiencing any issues. Never exceed a bulk bag’s SWL because doing so can have disastrous results, such as bag rupture, material leakage, and possible injuries.

On the other hand, the SFR is a ratio that illustrates the connection between the SWL and the minimum breaking strength of the bag’s constituent parts (fabric, webbing, and loops). It is a safety precaution incorporated into the bag’s construction. The components of a bulk bag with a 5:1 SFR, for example, are made to endure five times the SWL before breaking. This safety margin takes into consideration variables including possible production variances, dynamic loading during transportation, and material fatigue.

Why this distinction matters

Understanding the distinction between SWL and SFR is important because it makes clear the difference between the planned operational load and the bag’s ultimate strength. The SFR denotes the safety margin incorporated into the bag’s design, while the SWL is the weight you should never surpass while using the bag normally.

Failure to understand these concepts can have harmful results. For instance, it’s a risky misunderstanding to believe that a bag with a high SFR can be overloaded. Regardless of the SFR, the SWL is still the upper limit for safe operation.

Consider a bulk bag with a 5:1 SFR and a 1000 kg SWL. This indicates that 1000 kg can be safely carried in the bag. According to the SFR, the components of the bag should be able to support 5000 kg before breaking. But going above the 1000kg SWL is still very risky and should never be attempted. The SFR does not permit overloading; rather, it serves as a safety buffer.
