South Africa has become a leader in soybean growth and production over the past ten years, with recent harvests surpassing 2.5 million tonnes per year. Driven by better cultivars and a deliberate shift in crop rotation, South Africa has solidified its position as Africa’s top producer of soybeans.
Growing a huge crop is only half the fight, though. The true problem for soybean farmers is post-harvest logistics. These beans are valuable, nutrient-rich, and environmentally sensitive. The farmer’s packaging decision directly affects their bottom line. Bulk bags are an affordable, versatile and effective solution for soybean farmers.
Custom Bulk Bags (CBB) is a leading local manufacturer and supplier of customised FIBCs. We produce 3.5 million bulk bags annually for farmers across the region. We extrude and weave our own premium polypropylene fabric and manufacture our inner liners in-house.

Affordable soybean packaging
Rising input costs, from petrol and diesel to fertiliser and chemicals, are putting pressure on South African farmers. Efficiency in transportation and storage is essential for maintaining a sustainable profit margin. There are three different ways that high-quality bulk bags impact the bottom line:
- Quality preservation – Soybeans are vulnerable to insect infestation, heat damage, and mould growth. Customers want “Grade 1” quality, which is maintained with the appropriate bag.
- Operational speed – Time is money during the height of the harvest season. Bulk bags ensure that trucks spend more time moving and less time idling by enabling quick mechanical filling and unloading.
- Loss mitigation – Poor packaging causes bag failure or sifting (leakage). Even a 2% loss from subpar packaging can result in tens of thousands of Rands in lost revenue when dealing with tonnes of produce.

The best bulk bag types for soybeans
Bulk bags are not all equal. When it comes to soybeans, the design must take into consideration both the huge volume of the industry and the physical qualities of the beans. Circular or U-Panel FIBCs with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 1000kg to 1500kg are typically chosen by soybean producers.
- Breathable and ventilated fabric – If soybeans are harvested with a slightly greater moisture content, they can spoil faster when being stored. Although woven, standard polypropylene fabric isn’t often breathable enough to stop the beans from sweating.
Ventilated bulk bags are recommended as breathable strips in the fabric provide optimal airflow. This significantly lowers the risk of fungal development and spoiling during short-term storage or transit by preventing heat buildup and ensuring that moisture can escape.
- Export-ready compliance for food-grade materials – Both locally and internationally, the majority of South Africa’s soybean output is intended for human consumption. To guarantee they are free of impurities, loose threads, and dust, food-grade FIBCs are produced in clean room facilities. The harvest must comply with the strict health and safety standards, so using food-grade bags from a registered supplier like CBB is necessary.
- Inner liners – A regular bag would not be adequate for farmers who store soybeans in high-humidity areas or for those who transport processed soy meal, which is finer and more likely to leak.
A polyethylene liner can be inserted into the bulk bag. These liners offer a moisture-resistant and airtight barrier. They are necessary to protect the goods from outside moisture intrusion and stop tiny particles from sifting through the bag’s weave, even if they restrict breathability.
- Customised discharge and filling spouts – The majority of farmers use spout tops and discharge spouts to increase speed. These enable the bags to be linked straight to augers or silos, resulting in a closed-loop system that reduces spillage and manual effort.

Local FIBCs for South African farmers
The last thing you want to hear during a harvest is that your packaging is stuck at the port because of delays in international transportation. This is one of the main factors in favour of Custom Bulk Bags. CBB runs a top-notch production plant in Durban, offering dependability and convenience to the supply chain.
We can swiftly adjust to suit seasonal demands because we manufacture locally. A container from abroad doesn’t need to be delivered for months. Every bag bought from CBB contributes to the creation of jobs for South African labourers. Particularly in the manufacturing centre of KZN, we take satisfaction in generating jobs that support local families.
We also give our farmers a more consistent and reasonable price structure by eliminating the middleman and reducing the fluctuations of foreign freight costs and exchange rates. The demand for high-quality, regionally-produced, and reasonably priced packaging will further increase as the South African soybean sector grows through 2026 and beyond.
CBB gives you the peace of mind you need to concentrate on what you do best – feeding the country – thanks to our expertise in local manufacturing, dedication to food-grade safety, and long history of supporting the agricultural community.
