Steel mills and factories often need bulk packaging solutions for their raw materials and byproducts. Bulk bags are an ideal solution as they are incredibly strong, durable and lightweight. These bulk packaging products can hold between 500kg and 2000kg of materials, such as steel scrap, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust and waste products from the milling process.

Custom Bulk Bags is a leading manufacturer and supplier of bulk bags in South Africa. We produce up to 3.5 million bulk bags per year; all of which have a minimum safety factor rating of 5:1 and are manufactured in accordance with international regulations and standards. Our high-quality packaging products are used throughout Africa in a number of industries, making them suitable for steel mills and factories too.

Are bulk bags truly environmentally-friendly

How steel mills can use bulk bags

Steel factories often convert scrap metal, pig iron and various other metals into prime steel using various technologies, such as EAFs. These processes require mass quantities of raw materials and also produce some byproducts that will need to be stored and transported away from the mill.

This is where bulk bags can play a cost-effective and vital role in the operations of steel mills and similar factories. They are affordable but durable packaging solutions that can hold up to two cubic metres of material. The cubic shape of our bulk bags makes them stackable and easy to pack into shipping containers.

They make bulk storage and transport easier by breaking down the overall quantity of material into manageable loads. Where sharp raw materials, such as scrap steel, are involved, additional inner liners may be required to prevent the sharp edges from cutting the fabric of the bulk bags.

Many secondary materials, such as graphite, carbon and refractory products are granular or powdered. These materials are more easily stored in bulk bags without needing additional components. However, for fine powdery substances, a thin inner liner is recommended to prevent material from slipping between the weave of the bulk bag fabric.
