Bulk bags are the logistical backbone of nearly every significant industry in South Africa. They provide unparalleled cost-effectiveness, durability, and efficiency in a variety of sectors, including construction, agriculture, and mining. The forestry industry, which includes sawmilling, biomass generation, and timber harvesting, can also benefit from using these bulk packaging products.

Large quantities of wood, which are often abrasive and moist, present a problem that calls for sturdy packaging solutions. Custom Bulk Bags (CBB) provides the strength and customisation required to optimise processes, cut waste, and boost output throughout the forestry value chain.

We produce 3.5 million bags a year – all of which can safely hold between 500kg and 2000kg each. Our products can be tailored with various optional extras to suit your specific needs, whether you’re a timber producer, sawmiller, estate owner or biomass producer.

Applications of bulk bags in the forestry sector

These products are perfect for shipping and storing a wide range of wood-based products at different processing stages:

1. Cut timber and small logs – Consolidating smaller, cut-to-length timber and logs is a common use for bulk bags. They are important to the domestic and international firewood markets. They enable the direct delivery of large amounts of firewood, simple measurement, and tidy packaging. Importantly, ventilated bulk bags are usually chosen in this situation because they speed up the wood’s drying and curing process, limiting mould growth and preparing it for sale. Bulk bags are also used by sawmills to gather and handle tiny timber offcuts that are too valuable to throw away but too heavy for large-scale systems.

2. Pellets and Wood Chips -Wood pellets are used in the biomass and energy sector, and wood chips are a major product in the pulp and paper business. Although they can be heavy, pellets and chips flow freely. Bulk bags protect these materials from contamination while facilitating effective storage and transportation. Compared to open piling, the capacity to stack bulk bags saves a substantial amount of yard and storage area.

3. Wood particles and sawdust – Sawdust is a fine powdery byproduct of sawmilling that has special handling requirements due to combustion hazards and dust management. When handling fine sawdust, standard or coated bulk bags offer better containment, avoiding dust and minimising flammable dangers. Sawdust can be efficiently and cleanly transported to downstream industries using bulk bags.

Managing and maintaining bulk bags for forestry

Forestry products are harsh and abrasive, so extra caution is needed to avoid damaging bulk bags. The integrity of the woven fabric can be easily jeopardised by the sharp edges and spiky surfaces of wooden logs and branches. Here are some tips for handling and maintaining your bulk bags:

  • Preventing punctures and tears – When loading bulk bags, use caution to avoid sharp points poking holes in the base or sidewalls. Operators should try to lower logs slowly into the bag rather than just dumping them in. Use a thicker, loose-fitting inner liner for items with sharp edges, like splintered wood or rough lumber. This liner serves as a sacrificial barrier by absorbing the direct impact and keeping the sharp material from reaching the exterior woven fabric.
  • Frequent inspection – Bags should be visually examined for wear, tears, or broken stitching both before and after each use, especially at the bottom and seams, which are subjected to the greatest stress.
  • Control of moisture and mould – Use ventilated bags if the wood or chips have a high moisture content and need to dry (such as firewood). These bags keep the product’s integrity and market value intact by preventing the heat buildup and humidity that cause mould and mildew. Make sure the storage space has enough drainage and store the bulk bags on top of wooden pallets to prevent ground moisture from seeping up into the bags.
  • Safe storage and handling – Always use all four lifting loops to raise the bags. Never lift from just two or three since this uneven load increases the chance of loop failure and reduces the bag’s Safe Working Load (SWL). All bulk bags must be ordered with UV-stabilised fabric to keep the polypropylene from deteriorating in the intense South African sun.

Customised packaging solutions for sawdust and wood

Generic packaging is insufficient in the demanding South African forestry industry. To ensure safety and compliance, CBB specialises in producing bulk bags that are specially designed to handle wood and its byproducts. We offer the customisation options that sawdust and timber companies need.

To enable the necessary drying and curing of firewood and timber while maintaining quality during storage, we can create ventilated bulk bags with certain mesh patterns and fabric types that enhance airflow. We also provide coated or laminated bulk bags with special filling spouts and tops for sawdust. These designs minimise product loss and the dangers of airborne dust by enabling regulated, dust-free filling and secure closure.

We produce bulk bags with reinforced seams and strengthened lifting loops to endure the abrasive nature and high weight density of wood. We can also adjust the bag’s height, width, and base to precisely match your chosen transport volume and handling equipment, guaranteeing optimal container utilisation for economical export.

In addition to immediately solving the particular logistical difficulties faced by the South African forestry sector, working with a reputable local manufacturer like CBB guarantees that you will get packaging that satisfies international standards.
