Even if you’re not familiar with bulk bag terminology, the difference between a single-trip and a multi-trip bag should be quite clear. One is designed for single use, whereas the other can be reused multiple times – each use is referred to as a ‘trip’. The difference between these bags comes down to design and construction.

So, which bag is better for your needs? It’s important to note that even though a single-trip bulk bag is labelled as such, it can probably be used a few times before reaching the end of its usable life. A single-trip bag will have the industry standard safety factor rating of 5:1, whereas multi-trip bags will have a higher ratio.

Custom Bulk Bags is a leading manufacturer and supplier of bulk bags in South Africa. Our high-quality products have a minimum safety factor rating of 5:1 and can be reused multiple times. Bulk bags are a sustainable packaging solution due to their reusability and recyclability. But what makes a single-trip bag different to a multi-trip bag?

Making the necessary adjustments

A single-trip bulk bag can be turned into a multi-trip product through changes to the design and construction of the bag. The first component that is needed is high-tensile lifting loops. The stronger these straps or handles, the more times they can be placed under load. Secondly, a heavier fabric is required for the same reason; the stronger the body of the bulk bag, the more times it can be used.

Lastly, the length of the lifting loops and the manner in which they are sewn to the bag is an important factor. If the connection between the loop and the bag is long – if it runs down the entire length of the bag – then it will be a much stronger and more durable seam. A short connection is more likely to give way and separate after a few uses.

Why opt for a multi-trip bulk bag?

All of the products manufactured by Custom Bulk Bags can be used multiple times, which brings numerous benefits to our customers. Firstly, reusing bulk bags is important for the environment as it reduces waste, even though the polypropylene fabric is highly recyclable. In addition, it also minimises a company’s bottom line as fewer bags need to be purchased on a regular basis.

Multi-trip bulk bags are safer and more durable, which is important for hazard mitigation and employee safety. While it’s not recommended that bulk bags be overfilled, those with a higher safety factor rating are less likely to break under extreme loads. When you’re dealing with bags that can hold up to two tonnes of material, handling and safety become paramount.

In most cases, a multi-trip bulk bag will suit your needs better, but if you just need a simple and affordable solution to move a large load of material, then a single-trip bag will certainly suffice.
