There are many options when it comes to inner liners for bulk bags. Each of these serves a unique purpose, whether it’s moisture protection, improved material flow, anti-static or increased strength. One such inner liner is made from aluminium foil and this performs several functions at once.

As a leading manufacturer and supplier of bulk bags in South Africa, Custom Bulk Bags offers several different types of products. Each one can be tailormade to suit your company’s needs and uses. We offer bespoke printing, labelling and customisation through various optional extras – inner liners being just one of the choices.

Why opt for a foil liner

Aluminium foil liners are used to protect certain materials from deterioration, either due to moisture, air, UV light, temperature extremes or odours. It offers the most protection for sensitive products as it’s thicker than plastic liners, is non-porous and creates a completely dark and enclosed environment within the bulk bag.

Foil liners have the best protection against oxygen, moisture and light, which helps to preserve substances for longer periods than other liner materials. Foil is particularly useful for chemical manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and businesses that store and transport food items.

In any industry where the products are expensive, affected by atmospheric conditions or destined for human consumption, then the protective inner liners need to be absolutely effective. Foil liners are the best solution, despite carrying a higher cost than polyethylene and other materials.

Properties of foil liners

Foil liners are commonly made from three or four layers of different materials that are glued together or bonded through extrusion processes. The external layer of aluminium provides the most protection by cutting out the transmission of air, moisture, gases and light. Despite being a metal, foil liners can also have antistatic properties.

This minimises the risks associated with flammable products or powders that can ignite if a static discharge occurs. In addition to these properties, foil liners are the most effective way to prevent mould, fungi or contamination of food items. Certain foods can rot or become rancid when exposed to air and moisture, so these liners are critical for product preservation.

They can be manufactured to fit bulk bags and their attachments, including filling or discharge spouts. Spout foil liners help with the filling and discharging processes by minimising spillage and waste. In addition, they can be customised to provide a tight seal around your factory equipment and hoppers.
