According to data from the Minerals Council South Africa, the mining sector contributed R477 billion to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025, representing 5.8% of the total nominal economy and more than half of all national merchandise exports.
Iron ore is a key sector in this massive industrial ecosystem. It comprises about 12% of South Africa’s total annual value of mining production, making it the fourth largest commodity sector after coal, platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold. South Africa is the leading producer of iron on the African continent, accounting for almost 70% of Africa’s total iron content of more than 40 million tonnes a year.
This is largely from world-class, high-grade extraction operations in the Northern Cape, such as the Sishen, Kolomela and Khumani mines. The industry is always looking to optimise transport efficiency and material safety while managing various operational issues, such as global steel swings and domestic rail logistics constraints. That’s why forward-thinking mining companies are moving away from legacy loose-handling methods and embracing flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) – commonly known as bulk bags.
For a premier local manufacturer and supplier like Custom Bulk Bags (CBB), designing the right bulk bag is a strategic asset that directly protects your mine’s bottom line. We can produce up to 3.5 million bulk bags annually for mines and mineral processors in South Africa and neighbouring countries.

How FIBCs simplify iron ore storage and transportation
Iron ore and iron concentrates are dense, hard-wearing and very heavy. The packaging of these materials from the beneficiation plants to storage yards, rail heads and smelting facilities must be strong enough to withstand intense mechanical forces. Bulk bags are a highly adaptable solution for many key mining applications:
- Fine concentrate processing – High-grade iron ore is generally crushed, screened and magnetically separated into fine concentrates or ‘fines’. Substantial loss of material to wind and rain can occur when transporting these powders in open-topped trucks. Sealed bulk bags prevent the loss of product and help to keep the surroundings cleaner.
- Smelting plant batching – Smelting and steel manufacturing plants use bulk bags to accurately meter iron ore fines, binders and chemical reagents directly into the blast furnace hoppers. This controlled release reduces airborne industrial dust and enhances worker safety.
- Assay sampling and metallurgical testing – Mines routinely take large composites for geological testing and for quality control. Heavy-duty FIBCs are a secure, label-friendly, and highly traceable way of moving these critical multi-tonne samples between sites.
- Interim depot stockpiling – When rail corridors become temporary choke points, bulk bags allow mines to neatly and securely stockpile ore at regional logistics hubs. They are very stackable, allowing for maximum vertical yard space without permanent rigid infrastructure.

Iron ore bulk bag design standards
Iron ore is very dense, and a typical, off-the-shelf industrial bag won’t hold up to the pressure for long. Mining operations require custom-engineered FIBCs designed for heavy aggregates:
- Iron ore requires fabric with a high GSM (grammes per square metre), usually 200 GSM and above, made from premium polypropylene.
- Mining bags are generally rated to carry between 1500kg and 2000kg Safe Working Load (SWL).
- Single-trip bags are operated at a 5:1 safety factor; however, a 6:1 safety factor is strongly recommended for ore. This means that if bags are staged long-term or repeatedly hoisted by heavy farm or mine machinery, they will not suffer catastrophic failures and will maintain their structural integrity.
- Triple sift-proof seams are necessary for fine powdered substances. Tiny particles of iron ore can easily sift or leak through the microscopic punctures made by standard sewing needles along the edges of the bag. CBB combines the seams with special felt strips or thick filler cords. This triple sift-proofing perfectly seals off the needle holes, holding in the fine concentrate and stopping contamination of the environment.
- Too much moisture causes the iron ore fines to agglomerate or form an unstable sludge that makes the smelting process more difficult. To keep the mineral dry, the FIBC can be provided with an internal polythene (PE) liner or an external laminated coating, which creates an airtight, waterproof barrier. Also, since the packaging used in mining is often stored outdoors, the polypropylene must be treated with UV stabilisers to resist solar exposure without degradation.

Your trusted partner for world-class packaging
In an industry where time is money and delays are lost revenue, your packaging partner matters. If you buy your bulk bags from international brokers, you are subject to worldwide shipping delays, port interruptions and volatile currency swings.
CBB offers a trustworthy, top-notch domestic alternative. We have complete control over the structural integrity of each loop, seam, and panel since we manufacture our own heavy-duty fabrics and extrude our own polymer tapes.
To assess your automated conveyor belts, crane rigs, and forklifts, our technical consultants are available to perform practical site audits. We custom-engineer the precise spout diameters and loop configurations (such as cross-corner or stevedore loops) your organisation needs to achieve your production targets in a timely, cost-effective, and safe manner.
